Robert Labaree of NEC's Intercultural Institute brings his colleagues from traditional Turkish music ensemble Dünya to NEC for this concert exploring the lively interaction of cultural and religious traditions of the Middle East under the Ottoman Turks up to the 20th century. Folk, religious, and popular music and improvisations of the Turkish tradition are interwoven with classical Ottoman music newly transcribed from early Greek sources, Bektaşi Sufi music, Turkish-Jewish maftirim pieces in Hebrew based on Sufi music, and newly-composed polyphonic makam compositions.
